I need to begin with a disclaimer that I did not know or even follow Jennifer Perillo prior to the sudden and tragic death of her husband Mikey less than two weeks ago. With that being said, like so many others I was deeply affected.
For those of you that don’t know, Jennifer Perillo is a well-loved and highly-respected member of the food blogging community. She lost her husband in a split second when he died of a heart attack recently leaving her alone to raise their two young daughters, ages 3 and 8. As she struggles to recover from this devastating loss, she continues to cook and write her blog In Jennies Kitchen.
The blogging community quickly came together in support of her with the #apieformikey campaign. When it first started on Twitter, I read every post, looked at every picture, and thought that of course, I should make a peanut butter pie. But I did not make the pie. I was afraid. Afraid that if I made “that pie”, I would somehow be acknowledging that this really happened to Jennifer and could somehow happen to me as well.
I have always been a very private person and writing this blog has challenged me to open up a bit, about myself, my family and my experiences. It is easy for me to write about the specific recipe, but not very easy for me to write about the experience behind it. So let me share a little about myself now.
My husband of nearly 26 years is my very best friend. We decided to get married within three weeks of meeting each other, which made for an interesting first few years, but to this day, there is no one in the world I would rather wake up next to. He is a great father to our 19 year old son, has the most integrity of anyone I have ever met, makes me laugh at myself, but still believes in me even when I fail. The thought that he could be suddenly taken away from me has always been one of my greatest fears so when I read about Jennifer’s loss, it was a real blow.
Although I couldn’t make “that pie”, the latest effort by Bloggers without Borders, stirred me to action. It isn’t much in the big picture, but hopefully it will help in some small way. Like Jennifer, my husband’s favorite thing I make is pie. In my case, he loves my crust. So I am raffling off the key components to my husband’s favorite pies.
