Pie Love Raffle for Jennifer Perillo

I need to begin with a disclaimer that I did not know or even follow Jennifer Perillo prior to the sudden and tragic death of her husband Mikey less than two weeks ago.  With that being said, like so many others I was deeply affected.

For those of you that don’t know, Jennifer Perillo is a well-loved and highly-respected member of the food blogging community.  She lost her husband in a split second when he died of a heart attack recently leaving her alone to raise their two young daughters, ages 3 and 8.  As she struggles to recover from this devastating loss, she continues to cook and write her blog In Jennies Kitchen.

The blogging community quickly came together in support of her with the #apieformikey campaign.  When it first started on Twitter, I read every post, looked at every picture, and thought that of course, I should make a peanut butter pie.  But I did not make the pie.  I was afraid.  Afraid that if I made “that pie”, I would somehow be acknowledging that this really happened to Jennifer and could somehow happen to me as well.

I have always been a very private person and writing this blog has challenged me to open up a bit, about myself, my family and my experiences.  It is easy for me to write about the specific recipe, but not very easy for me to write about the experience behind it.  So let me share a little about myself now.

My husband of nearly 26 years is my very best friend.  We decided to get married within three weeks of meeting each other, which made for an interesting first few years, but to this day, there is no one in the world I would rather wake up next to.  He is a great father to our 19 year old son, has the most integrity of anyone I have ever met, makes me laugh at myself, but still believes in me even when I fail.  The thought that he could be suddenly taken away from me has always been one of my greatest fears so when I read about Jennifer’s loss, it was a real blow.

The love of my life

Although I couldn’t make “that pie”, the latest effort by Bloggers without Borders, stirred me to action.  It isn’t much in the big picture, but hopefully it will help in some small way.  Like Jennifer, my husband’s favorite thing I make is pie.   In my case, he loves my crust.  So I am raffling off the key components to my husband’s favorite pies.

For each $10 donation to Bloggers without Borders, you will receive one entry to win my Pie Love Raffle.

The prize includes:

I will pay shipping anywhere in the continental United States.

To enter, click on the BWOB icon blow or on the right hand side of the page, make your donation, and then leave a comment with the amount and confirmation number.  The “raffle” will be open until 8:00 p.m. EST, Monday August 29, 2011.

I love that you’re raffling off a pie set. My husband loves coconut custard pie, something that isn’t often found in restaurants (coconut cream, yes, but not custard) so he’s thrilled when I have one waiting for him.

I’m so touched by all of this and been keeping a close eye on all the growth and support. Great auction item. I could use this especially because I love pies so much and don’t have the best resources for it. I’m looking to get into baking more 🙂 especially as the food blogger I am.

Sadly, Jennie’s financial need was misrepresented by both Bloggers without Borders and Shauna Ahern. While donors were raising money, Jennie was Tweeting about $600 boots, eating expensive meals and ordering furniture. Some bloggers are upset that they were deceived. Google it, it’s out there.

If you find out that a machine is only a few weeks old, make sure that you play it.
